I always assumed that everyone used toys to act out new adventures for the characters. Even changing the character’s name and story. As children that’s at least what all my friends and I did. Then I heard Director Kevin Smith talk about only recreating the movie scenes with his star wars toys and that blew my mind. Not saying there is a wrong way to play with toys, but that seems so boring. In fairness I imagine that’s what my kids think when I tell them these toys are only for me to photograph and they can’t play with them.
I’ll certainly go see Rise of Skywalker, but I do hope they take a break and rethink their strategy. The disappointment of this trilogy lies in trying to please everyone. To be clear everyone means those who loved the original trilogy and those who wanted a new generation. I don’t want to even discuss those people who have a problem with women and minorities being in a universe filled with aliens. This generational middle ground has led to mediocrity. I wanted to see either the end of Luke’s journey or the beginning of Rey’s. A little of each has just been unsatisfying. I think this next set of films that will be completely free of the ‘saga’ will be where Disney hits its stride.
One side note on the teaser trailer. How disappointing was it to see that Rey had just glued Anakin’s lightsaber back together. What a missed oppertunity for her to make it her own. Perhaps the trailer was altered to not show that in fact she has done something, but the obvious choice is for her to create a double lightsaber. Like Darth Maul’s. We know Rey prefers the staff as a weapon, so how cool would it be to see her create one from the destroyed Skywalker saber.
Thanks for looking.
